Cows first came to the United States in 1611. Cows are of the Bovine family. They are Mammals. They came with the Colonist from England, to the Colony of Jamestown. Most Americans have relied upon the Cow for a food source. Holsteins are the Cows that most of our Milk comes from. 90% of the worlds supplied Milk comes from Dairy Cows. There are other breeds that contribute to the Milk Supply namely: Jerseys, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Aryshire and Milking, Shorthorn. Cows must have a Calf to produce Milk.
Cows are about two years old when they have their first Calve. Cows will provide Milk for around 4 years. About 93% of the Milk Cows are the Holstein variety. They are the black and white colored Cows. Sometimes they can be fawn or tan colored. A Male Cow is called a Bull and a Female Cow is called a Heifer. Baby Cows are called Calves. Calf’s only weigh about 60 lbs. at birth developing into a heavy weight at over 1500 lbs. This takes about two years for the Cow to reach this weight. It also becomes mature at this point in its life. Cows have a substantial higher body temperature than most animals, it is 101.5F. A modern myth about Cows is that they have four stomachs. This is not true.

They also eat about 40 lbs. of food a day. Our taste for dairy products is astounding. Also Cow’s Milk has nourished most American Children. The Modern selectively breed of Cow, can produce the equivalent of 10 times the milk, of the Cows brought with the colonist in Jamestown. A single Cow Can Produces 25 gallons of Milk a day.
